"Passkey authentication (FIDO2)" introduced by Rakuten Securities in October 2025. It's supposed to be a convenient system that allows you to quickly log in using fingerprint or facial recognition, but there are a lot of people on SNS and Q&A sites saying that they are unable to log in due to an error that says ``You cannot log in with your ID/PW because the passkey is valid.''
As of February 2026, due to the Japan Securities Dealers Association's revised guidelines, securities companies are accelerating the trend of introducing phishing-resistant authentication such as passkeys. Rakuten Securities has also introduced passkeys as part of this effort, but problems have been reported with some terminals.
In this article, we will explain 5 causes of Rakuten Securities passkey authentication errors and specific countermeasures for each in an easy-to-understand manner. Please refer to this article if you are thinking, "I can't log in with iSPEED!" or "I want to delete my passkey!"
What is a passkey anyway? Reasons why Rakuten Securities introduced it
Roughly speaking, a passkey is a system for logging in using fingerprint or face recognition instead of a password. Officially, it is an authentication method based on an international standard called FIDO2, and is promoted by the three major platform companies: Apple, Google, and Microsoft.
Conventional password authentication had the following weaknesses.
- Entering password on phishing site
- If you use the same password over and over again, it will be leaked somewhere and you will be fooled.
- You can't log in because you forgot your password
With Passkey, your authentication information is stored on your smartphone or PC and not sent to the server, so you don't have to worry about your authentication information being leaked even if you are fooled by a phishing site.
Rakuten Securities introduced passkey authentication on October 26, 2025 (Rakuten Securities passkey authentication page). The background is the Japan Securities Dealers Association (JSDA) revised guidelines that went into effect in October 2025, requiring securities companies to introduce authentication methods with high phishing resistance.
In other words, passkeys are a good mechanism to strengthen security, but the current situation is that problems that prevent logins have frequently occurred right after they were introduced.
5 reasons why you can't log in with a passkey
There are five main reasons why an error occurs with the Rakuten Securities passkey. Please check which one applies to you.
Cause 1: iSPEED app is still an old version
This is the most common cause. If Rakuten Securities' smartphone app "iSPEED" has not been updated to a version that supports passkeys, Error code "330-60172" will be displayed and you will not be able to log in.
The passkey is created on the website, but the iSPEED app must also support passkey authentication. If the app is still outdated, a message will appear saying "You cannot log in with ID/PW because the passkey is valid."
Cause 2: Recommended environment is not met
For Rakuten Securities passkey authentication, the recommended environment has been determined in detail. The recommended environment as of February 2026 is as follows.
When creating passkey:
- iPhone: iOS 16 or higher, Safari browser
- Android: Android 9 or higher, Google Chrome
When logging in with passkey:
- iPhone/iPad/Mac: Safari
- Android: Google Chrome
- PC: Windows 10 or higher, Chrome or Microsoft Edge
In short, it will not work if you are using Chrome on an iPhone or using another browser like Safari on Android. In particular, the official statement clearly states that it does not work properly with Google's in-app browser.
Cause 3: Using a VPN
If VPN (Virtual Private Network) is turned on, you may not be able to create or use a passkey. Rakuten Securities' official notice also advises on VPN cancellation.
Be careful if you live overseas or have your company's VPN installed on your smartphone.
Cause 4: You are stuck in the limit of 1 account and 1 passkey
At Rakuten Securities, only one passkey can be created per account. For example, if you create a passkey on a smartphone and then try to create one on a PC, the new creation will be rejected on the PC.
In this case, you will need to log in to your PC using the passkey you created on your smartphone (method that uses smartphone authentication via Bluetooth).
Cause 5: Problem with biometric authentication or lock settings on the device side
The passkey uses the device unlock method (fingerprint, facial recognition, PIN, etc.) to verify your identity. Therefore, it does not work well in the following cases.
- Lock screen is not set on your device
- Biometric registration data is corrupted
- Password manager (iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager, etc.) is disabled
- Bluetooth is turned off when logging in from a PC
Causes and solutions you can try now
Once you know the cause, try the following solutions in order.
Solution 1: Update the iSPEED app to the latest version
Open the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android), search for "Rakuten Securities iSPEED" and tap the "Update" button if it appears. After updating, please close the app completely and restart it.
The most common reports are that this alone solved the problem.
Solution 2: Switch to recommended browser
If you want to log in from the website, please use the following browsers.
- iPhone/Mac → Safari
- Android → Google Chrome
- Windows PC → Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge
Especially for iPhone users, it is important to use Safari rather than Chrome or other browsers.
Solution 3: Turn off the VPN
Check if VPN is enabled from "Settings" → "VPN" on your smartphone. If it's enabled, turn it off and try logging in again.
Solution 4: Delete and re-register the passkey
If your passkey is not working properly, it is best to delete it and then register it again. The steps are as follows.
- Log in to the Rakuten Securities website with your ID and password (*This cannot be done if the passkey is valid, so go to the next "Countermeasure 5")
- Open the "Security Settings" screen
- Remove passkey
- Create a new passkey
Solution 5: Pause the passkey with automatic voice dialing
If your passkey is enabled and you are unable to log in using your ID and password, you can temporarily suspend your passkey by calling Rakuten Securities' automatic voice dial line.
- Call the automatic voice dialer from the phone number registered with Rakuten Securities
- Verify your identity
- Passkey will be disabled for 30 minutes
- Log in with your ID and password within the last 30 minutes and delete the passkey from your security settings
There is a 30 minute time limit, so be sure to log in and delete your passkey as soon as you call.
Is there a way to log in without using a passkey?
Some people may think, "I want to log in with my traditional ID and password because I'm having trouble with passkeys."
As of February 2026, Rakuten Securities allows If you have not created a passkey, you can log in with your ID and password as usual. Creating a passkey is optional, so if you haven't set one yet, there's no need to force one.
However, due to the revised guidelines of the Japan Securities Dealers Association, multi-factor authentication such as passkeys may be required at each securities company in the future. You may eventually need to switch to passkeys, so it's a good idea to get used to them as soon as possible.
If you have already created a passkey, you can return to ID/password authentication by deleting the passkey using steps 4 and 5.
Prevent trouble! Three tips when setting a passkey
If you are planning to set or re-set a passkey, it will be easier to avoid trouble by keeping the following three points in mind.
Tips 1: Check the recommended environment in advance
Before creating a passkey, make sure that your device, OS, and browser are in the recommended environment. In particular, OS version and browser type are important. For iPhone, iOS 16 or higher + Safari is required; for Android, Android 9 or higher + Chrome is required.
Tips 2: Check your device's lock settings
Passkeys use the device's biometric authentication or PIN, so they cannot be used on devices that do not have a lock screen set. Test in advance to see if fingerprint authentication and facial recognition work properly.
Tip 3: Turn on Bluetooth when logging in from a PC
When logging in with a passkey from your computer, use your smartphone's passkey via Bluetooth. Please don't forget to turn on Bluetooth on both your PC and smartphone.
FAQ
If I delete my Rakuten Securities passkey, will it be safe?
Even if you delete the passkey and return to ID/password authentication, a certain level of security will be maintained if additional login authentication (SMS authentication) is set. However, passkeys are more resistant to phishing, so we recommend resetting them to passkeys as soon as your environment is ready.
What happens to the passkey if I change my smartphone model?
The passkey is synced to iCloud Keychain (iPhone) or Google Password Manager (Android), so it will be carried over to a new device with the same Apple ID/Google account. However, it cannot be carried over when changing from iPhone to Android (or vice versa), so please delete the passkey beforehand and recreate it on the new device.
Can I use the passkey with apps other than iSPEED (such as MarketSpeed)?
As of February 2026, the Rakuten Securities website and iSPEED app support passkey authentication. MarketSpeed II (PC version) uses traditional ID/password authentication. Please check the Rakuten Securities official page for the latest information on compatible apps.
What should I do if I cannot log in before the passkey is suspended (30 minutes)?
Passkey authentication will be enabled again after 30 minutes. You can pause your service for another 30 minutes by calling the automated voice dialer again. Don't rush, just call and start logging in right away.
