In February 2026, Notion officially released the "Custom Agent" feature. An AI assistant that automatically works 24 hours a day if you set it up—sounds extremely convenient, doesn't it?
But when you actually try to use it, you'll notice quite a lot of complaints on social media, such as ``I can't find the agent menu,'' ``I can't connect to Slack,'' and ``I made it, but it doesn't work.''
In this article, we will explain in an easy-to-understand manner the reasons why the Notion custom agent cannot be configured or does not work, and the correct configuration procedure, based on the latest information as of February 2026.
What exactly is Notion custom agent?
Custom agents are a new feature added in Notion 3.3 (released February 24, 2026). Roughly speaking, it is an AI that automatically performs tasks in response to triggers if you set instructions in advance.
The conventional Notion AI was an assistant that would answer if you asked, but the big difference with the custom agent is that it acts on its own without asking.
For example you can do this:
- Aggregates the database at 6am every morning and automatically posts daily reports to Slack
- When a specific question is asked in Slack, an answer is automatically sent from the internal wiki
- When a new item is added to the database, it is automatically categorized and assigned to the person in charge
In other words, it is a function that allows you to create your own AI business assistant without programming.
5 reasons why custom agents cannot be used or do not work
When you say, "I set it up, but it doesn't work!", the following 5 patterns apply to you. Let's check them in order.
Cause 1: The plan is not Business or higher
This is the most common cause. According to Notion official help, custom agents can only be used with Business plan or higher.
In the free plan/Plus plan, the "Agents" menu is not even displayed on the left sidebar. If you can't find the custom agent menu, please check your plan first.
To check, just open Settings → Plans. The Business plan is $18 per member per month (as of February 2026).
Cause 2: Workspace administrator has not enabled AI features
If you are on the Business plan but cannot use the agent, the workspace administrator (Admin) may not have enabled the Notion AI feature.
Ask your administrator to check your permission to create custom agents from "Settings → AI Settings". For security reasons, some organizations may restrict agent creation to administrators only.
Cause 3: Slack integration has not been configured in advance
If you want to post to Slack from an agent, you need to connect to Slack AI Connector in advance. This is not done on the agent side, but from Notion's AI settings screen.
Here are the steps:
- Open Notion's Settings → Connections
- Search for “Slack AI Connector” and connect
- Grant the necessary permissions for the Notion app on Slack
This setting can only be made by a workspace administrator. If you are a general member, please ask the administrator.
As of February 2026, Private channels and direct messages are not supported. Only public channels can be linked.
Cause 4: Agent has not been granted access privileges
Custom agents do not have access to the entire workspace by default for security reasons. You need to explicitly give permission to use this database or read this page.
If you create an agent but it returns "No data found", please review your access settings. On the agent edit screen, you can add pages and databases you want to reference one by one.
Cause 5: Mistake in trigger settings
A surprisingly common cause of "not working" is a misconfiguration of the trigger (starting condition). Here are some common patterns:
- Schedule time zone difference: The schedule is set in UTC and is out of sync with Japan time
- Forgot to specify channel for Slack trigger: Forgetting to select the target channel
- The conditions of the database trigger are too narrow: The settings are set to react only to specific property changes
Scheduled triggers have a time zone specification, so make sure it is set to "Asia/Tokyo".
How to create a custom agent correctly (3 steps)
From here, I will introduce the steps to actually create an agent. We will explain step by step so that even those who are not familiar with Notion can use it.
Step 1: Create a new agent
Click the "+" button in the "Agents" section on the left sidebar. Then, a dialogue screen with AI will open.
Here, all you have to do is write what you want to do in Japanese, like ``Collect the unfinished tasks in the task database at 9am every morning and post them to the #general channel.'' Notion's AI automatically drafts instructions, triggers, and permissions.
Of course, you can choose from templates or build it manually from scratch. At first, we recommend letting the AI create a draft and adjusting the details manually.
Step 2: Set up triggers and access permissions
Review the draft created by AI. What you should especially check:
- Trigger: If it is a scheduled type, check the time zone and frequency. If it is a Slack trigger, check the target channel
- Access privileges: Are the referenced databases and pages specified correctly?
- Instructions: Are the output format and processing logic as intended
When using Slack triggers, it is assumed that the "Slack AI Connector" mentioned above has already been connected.
Step 3: Run the test and confirm
Once configured, you can manually test it by clicking "Run now". It is safe to try it out on a test database or Slack channel rather than going into production immediately.
You can check the execution results in the activity log. ``Which instructions were interpreted'' and ``what was output'' are all recorded, so if there is a problem, you can debug it from here.
Notes on free trial period and fees
According to Notion official release notes, custom agents will be available for free until May 3, 2026.
After May 4, 2026, we will transition to a pay-as-you-go system called "Notion Credit." In other words, fees are charged based on the number of times the agent is executed and the amount of processing. The specific fee structure has not yet been announced as of February 2026.
In short, it is wise to try out various things now. If you find an agent that suits your team during the free period, you can avoid unnecessary expenses even after you start paying.
However, please note that the free trial is only available for Workspaces on the Business plan or higher. The plan itself will be charged separately.
3 usage ideas: These are convenient ways to use
Finally, I will introduce an example of a custom agent that may be useful in practice.
1. Automated daily report and review every morning
An agent that posts "yesterday's task completion status" and "today's schedule" to Slack at a fixed time every morning. This usage was also a hot topic in X. The hassle of manually writing daily reports will be reduced to zero.
2. Automatically answer Slack questions from the knowledge base
If you register your internal Wiki (Notion page) as a knowledge base, it will automatically answer when you are asked in Slack, ``Tell me how to do 〇〇.'' By reducing inquiries to information systems and general affairs, the productivity of the entire team increases.
3. Automatic classification and assignment of new tasks
An agent that reads new items added to the database, automatically categorizes them, and assigns them to the appropriate person. Project management becomes much easier.
