"My Google Maps Timeline suddenly disappeared... all of it?" "I tried to look back at a trip and everything was blank." Since around 2025, more and more people have been running into this exact problem.
The cause is a major change to how Google stores Location History. Timeline data used to be saved in the cloud on Google's servers. Now it's been moved to on-device storage, meaning it lives on your phone. Because of that shift, a lot of people have lost data without realizing anything had changed.
In this guide, based on the latest information available as of March 2026, we'll explain why your Timeline disappeared, how restoration works, and which settings can help protect your data going forward.
What Is Google Maps Timeline?
Timeline in Google Maps is a feature that automatically records where you were and when, based on your phone's GPS data. Officially, it's part of Google's "Location History" feature.
It's useful when you want to check something like, "What was the name of that hotel I stayed at on last month's business trip?" or "What route did we take on last year's vacation?"
But starting around December 2024, Google made a major change to how Timeline works, and many users suddenly found themselves saying, "My Timeline is gone!"
Why Your Timeline Disappeared or Stopped Recording: The Move to On-Device Storage
The biggest reason is that Google changed Timeline data storage from cloud-based storage to device-based storage.
Google began rolling out this change in stages in late 2024, and cloud storage was fully discontinued after June 2025. In other words, your Timeline data now exists only on your phone.
In plain English, here's how the data can disappear:
- Google sends an email saying "Timeline storage is changing" around December 2024.
- If you don't migrate your data by the deadline, May 14, 2025, your cloud data is automatically deleted.
- People who missed the notice lose a large amount of Timeline history.
On top of that, in March 2025, Google had a bug that mistakenly deleted Timeline data for some users. According to TechnoEdge's report, Google apologized for a "technical issue" that deleted Timeline data and directed users to restore it from backups.
Watch Out for Auto-Delete Settings Too
Another easy-to-miss factor is the default auto-delete setting. Google changed the default auto-delete period for Location History to 3 months. That means if you haven't changed the setting, anything older than three months may be automatically deleted.
If you're thinking, "I tried to check a trip from six months ago and it wasn't there," auto-delete is probably the reason.
How to Restore a Deleted Timeline
If your data is gone, whether you can restore it depends on whether you had a backup.
If You Have a Backup: Restoration May Be Possible
If you had Timeline "Backup" turned on, an encrypted copy of your data is stored on Google's servers. You can import it with these steps:
- Open the Google Maps app.
- Tap your profile icon in the top right, then choose "Timeline."
- Tap the cloud icon in the top right.
- On the "Backup" screen, choose the device you want to restore from.
- Tap the "More" icon (⋮), then tap "Import."
- Tap "Import" again on the confirmation screen.
According to Google Maps official Help, backups can take several days to show up, so don't panic if your data doesn't appear immediately after importing.
If You Don't Have a Backup
Unfortunately, if you didn't have backup enabled, deleted data generally can't be restored. Google has also stated that data can't be recovered without a backup.
That said, a Reddit user-made tool covered by Gadget Hacks may help merge older data exported through Google Takeout with your current data. Use it at your own risk.
5 Settings to Protect Your Timeline Data Going Forward
To keep this from happening again, here are five settings you should check right now.
1. Turn On Backup
Go to Google Maps → profile icon → Timeline → cloud icon → turn "Backup" ON. This is the most important step. Once it's on, an encrypted copy of your Timeline data is copied to Google's servers.
2. Change the Auto-Delete Period
The default "3 months" setting can wipe out your history quickly. If you want to keep long-term records, change it to "36 months" or "Don't auto-delete".
How to change it: Timeline → "⋮" in the top right → Settings → "Auto-delete Location History."
3. Make Sure Location History Is On
If Location History itself is turned off, Timeline won't record anything. Open Google Maps → profile icon → Timeline → Settings, then check that "Location History" is turned on.
4. Don't Change Your Password During a Phone Upgrade
According to Google Maps Community's official guide, if you change your Google Account password around the time you switch phones, your new device may lose access to the backup area. Avoid changing your password before or right after a phone upgrade, and wait until your Timeline transfer is complete.
5. Check Backup on Your Old Phone Before Switching
Before moving to a new phone, open Google Maps on your old device and make sure the backup is up to date. If backup is enabled, sign in to the same Google Account on your new phone and use the "Import" steps above to restore your data.
Why You Can't View Timeline on a Computer Anymore
Plenty of people are also wondering, "I used to check Timeline in a browser on my PC. Why can't I see it anymore?" That's part of the same change.
Since December 2024, Timeline has been viewable only in the smartphone app. You can't view it from Google Maps on a computer anymore.
Basically, because the data is now stored on your device, it can only be accessed from the phone that has that data. That's inconvenient if you used Timeline from a PC for work, but Google says the change was made to improve privacy.
FAQ
If I didn't turn on Timeline backup, is my old data gone for good?
In most cases, yes. After cloud storage was discontinued in June 2025, there was no recovery path for deleted data without a backup. Turn backup on now to protect future data.
I changed phones and my whole Timeline disappeared. What should I do?
If backup was enabled on your old phone, you can restore it on the new phone by going to Google Maps → Timeline → cloud icon → choose the device → "Import." If you still have the old phone, check its backup status first.
I didn't realize auto-delete was set to 3 months. If I switch it to 36 months, will deleted data come back?
Unfortunately, no. Data that's already been auto-deleted won't return when you change the setting. The change only applies to data going forward.
Does the Timeline change apply to iPhone too?
Yes. Google Maps for iPhone, the iOS version, has also moved to on-device Timeline storage. The backup and import steps are mostly the same, but on iPhone you should also check location permissions: Settings → Google Maps → Location → "Always."
